Meet the Independent Hotel of the Year 2026 finalists: Under 50 Rooms
The Independent Hotel Show Awards celebrate the hotels, individuals and design projects raising standards across the UK’s independent hospitality sector. For 2026, the Independent Hotel of the Year award has been divided into two categories, ensuring properties are recognised alongside hotels of a similar scale.
Here, we introduce the five hotels shortlisted for Independent Hotel of the Year – Under 50 Rooms, each showing how smaller properties can deliver highly individual and memorable guest experiences.
Calcot & Spa
Set within a 240-acre Cotswold estate, Calcot & Spa combines relaxed country hospitality with an extensive approach to wellness, food and outdoor experiences. Its 35 bedrooms are complemented by a spa with indoor and outdoor facilities, the Grain Store fitness and wellbeing space, restaurants, tennis courts and opportunities to explore the estate by bike or on foot. Calcot’s relationship with its landscape is central to its identity. Around 220 acres have been given over to rewilding, creating wildflower meadows and habitats for birds, insects and other wildlife, while five beehives produce honey from the estate. By bringing together family-friendly hospitality, restorative experiences and long-term care for its surroundings, Calcot offers a contemporary interpretation of the Cotswold country retreat.
Cromlix
Owned by Kim and Andy Murray, Cromlix is a five-star Victorian country estate near Dunblane with a style it describes as “elegance, undone”. Individually designed bedrooms and suites combine rich colour, contemporary art and playful floral details, creating the atmosphere of a luxurious but welcoming private home. Recent additions include new dining experiences and the Woodland Retreat, featuring treatment rooms, a sauna and a cold plunge overlooking the estate lochan. Food is closely connected to the surrounding landscape, with ingredients grown in the expanded kitchen garden or foraged from the hotel’s 34 acres of woodland. From its purple tennis court and creative workshops to falconry and foraging, Cromlix uses the freedom of independent ownership to offer an experience that feels unmistakably Scottish and entirely its own.
Foxhill Manor
Foxhill Manor takes intimacy and personalisation to another level. Located within the 500-acre Farncombe Estate overlooking the Vale of Evesham, the private-house hotel has just eight individually designed bedrooms, giving its team the freedom to shape each stay around its guests. Its all-inclusive Full Fox experience removes many of the formalities traditionally associated with luxury hotels, allowing guests to choose when and where they dine, explore the estate or simply settle into the house as if it were their own. Each bedroom has a distinctive identity, while guests can also use the House Spa at neighbouring Dormy House. Available for individual stays or exclusive use, Foxhill Manor demonstrates how a small hotel can combine five-star standards with the warmth, flexibility and informality of a private country home.
The Cavendish at Baslow
Located on the Chatsworth Estate in the Peak District, The Cavendish at Baslow combines heritage, contemporary design and a close connection to the people and landscape around it. Its 28 individually designed bedrooms feature antiques, locally woven textiles and art from the Devonshire Collections, while the hotel’s welcoming public spaces have been created to feel more like countryside living rooms than formal hotel lobbies. Guests can discover Chatsworth through experiences including conservation tours, private fishing, kitchen garden visits and itineraries curated by Chatsworth Ambassadors. The hotel’s restaurants also showcase estate-grown and locally sourced ingredients, supported by collaboration between chefs, gardeners, farmers and producers. This strong sense of place gives The Cavendish a character that could not easily be recreated anywhere else.
The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa
Occupying the centre of one of Britain’s most recognisable examples of Georgian architecture, The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa offers an experience rooted in more than 250 years of Bath history. Its 45 individually designed rooms and suites bring colour and personality to their historic setting, while the secluded gardens provide an unexpected sense of space behind the famous crescent. Guests can dine at the three-AA-Rosette Montagu’s Mews, relax in the hotel’s Georgian Bath House spa or stay in the private Garden Villa. The hotel balances the responsibility of caring for a landmark property with a modern and characterful approach to British luxury. Its combination of architecture, gardens, wellness, dining and highly personal service makes a stay feel closely connected to Bath while retaining a distinctive identity of its own.
The winner of Independent Hotel of the Year – Under 50 Rooms will be revealed at the Independent Hotel Show Awards on 5 October 2026. The ceremony takes place from 17:00 at Olympia London, following the first day of the Independent Hotel Show.
