The Hotelier Edit: Maids Head Hotel

A member of the IH London team recently stayed at the property and caught up with Georgina Postlethwaite, Marketing Manager, to learn more about the guest experience, unique offerings, and what makes the destination so special.

The Maids Head Hotel has welcomed guests for centuries. What does it mean to lead a property with such a rich history, and how do you keep that legacy alive for modern travellers?

It’s a privilege to be part of a hotel with such an extraordinary history located in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter in Norwich. We say that Norwich is the City of Stories and the Maids Head the Hotel of stories. Our Vision and Values is based on Our Guests, Our People and Our Heritage. We honour that heritage by preserving the stories and character of the building, while ensuring today’s guests enjoy the warmth, comfort and thoughtful service expected of a modern luxury stay.maids head 1

Hospitality is often described as a people-first industry. Looking back on your own journey, what experiences have shaped your leadership style the most?

My leadership style has been shaped by working closely with dedicated teams and understanding that genuine hospitality comes from people who feel valued and supported. Creating a positive culture where colleagues can thrive is something I believe guests genuinely feel during their stay.

Norwich has such a strong sense of culture, creativity, and history. How does the city itself influence the guest experience at The Maids Head?

Norwich has a wonderful individuality, with its rich history, independent spirit and thriving cultural scene. Being located opposite the cathedral and within walking distance of the city’s landmarks, theatres and independent businesses allows guests to experience the very best of Norwich from our doorstep.

Today’s luxury guest is looking for more than just a beautiful stay. How do you create experiences that feel personal, memorable, and emotionally connected?

For us, luxury is about creating a genuine sense of welcome and understanding what matters to each guest. Whether it’s a thoughtful recommendation, remembering personal preferences or simply offering attentive service, it’s those small details that create lasting memories. The Hotel has invested in the guest experience. Whether this is a Rosette Dining experience in the Hotel’s WinePress Restaurant where seasonal food, sourced from responsible local producers is championed; or a ride in one of the Hotel’s three vintage Bentleys offering guests complimentary chauffeur driven spins around the City; or the opportunity to take one of the Hotel’s Bobbin Bikes out to plan their own adventure. Coupled with the investment in contemporary designed bedrooms, all with their own unique design features.

The Maids Head blends historic character with contemporary comfort so effortlessly. Are there any spaces, details, or design touches within the hotel that you feel particularly capture its personality?maids head 2

We’ve worked carefully to preserve the building’s heritage while introducing contemporary comforts that allow guests to relax and feel at home. Guests can truly connect with the hotel’s history in the WinePress Restaurant, set within the hotel’s historic courtyard, where the first mail coaches arrived from London in the 1780s.  The Snug offers another glimpse into the past — once the place where travellers gathered by the fire before boarding coaches bound for London or Great Yarmouth, it is now an intimate private dining room, perfect for celebrations and special occasions.

What do you think guests remember most after staying at The Maids Head Hotel?

I believe guests remember the feeling they experience while staying with us — a sense of warmth, comfort and genuine care, combined with the character and history that make The Maids Head unique. Our staff are our biggest asset, we are the Maids Head family! A recent TA review summed this up “…..But what you'll remember, is how the place made you feel. Which is the whole game, really....”  This is exactly what we aim to achieve, if we can send people on their way wanting and planning their next visit then we are happy and know we have done our job well.

Describe the hotel’s atmosphere in three words.

Welcoming, timeless, distinctive.

Independent hotels often have a unique freedom and individuality. How does being an independent property shape the decisions you make and the culture you create?

Being independent allows us to make decisions that are true to the hotel’s identity, our guests and our city. It gives us the freedom to celebrate our individuality, build meaningful local partnerships and create a culture that feels personal, authentic and deeply connected to the community.maids head 3

That individuality, combined with the dedication of our team, has recently been recognised with both the Taste of England Award and Hotel of the Year at the 2026 Suffolk and Norfolk Tourism Awards. These accolades are a reflection of our continued commitment to delivering exceptional hospitality and our ambition to be recognised as Norfolk’s finest for hospitality.

Sustainability in hospitality can mean many things — from sourcing locally to protecting heritage buildings. What does responsible hospitality look like at The Maids Head Hotel?

Responsible hospitality is about caring for both our environment and our heritage and our team are fully committed to this end. Our dedicated sustainability committee have been achieving great things of late. In 2025 we were awarded with an ECOsmart Silver Award and are now striving to achieve Gold.

As travel habits continue to evolve, what do you think guests will value most from luxury stays over the next few years?

I believe guests will increasingly value genuine, thoughtful service and experiences that feel authentic and personal. Luxury today is less about formality and more about creating meaningful moments — whether that’s championing local food and drink producers, connecting guests with what’s on their doorstep, or offering experiences that leave a lasting memory long after they return home.
