Historic Welsh boutique hotel Penally Abbey placed on the market
Penally Abbey, one of Wales’s most admired boutique hotels, has been placed on the market after more than a decade under the stewardship of the Boissevain family.
Overlooking Tenby Beach, Carmarthen Bay and Caldey Island, Penally Abbey is a Grade II* listed limestone mansion set within six acres of gardens and woodland. Built in a gothic vernacular style, the former rectory is known for its large windows, ogee-headed doors and tranquil setting on the site of a 6th-century monastery. The building’s architectural significance and coastal position have long made it one of Pembrokeshire’s most distinctive hospitality properties.
Since taking ownership in 2014, Lucas and Melanie Boissevain have overseen extensive renovation and sensitive restoration, maintaining the hotel’s historic charm while creating a warm, contemporary atmosphere, a rennovation which earned the hotel a nomination for Outstanding New Hotel in the 2016 Independent Hotel Show Awards.
The property operates as a twelve-bedroom destination hotel with a casual fine dining restaurant, lounge spaces and a vaulted-ceiling banqueting hall.
Penally Abbey has received multiple awards and national recognition as one of the country’s leading small hotels. The formal grounds comprise roughly one acre of well-tended gardens bordering a further five acres of mature woodland, providing guests with sea views and peaceful surroundings that are integral to the hotel’s appeal. The business has delivered consistent repeat custom and healthy trading performance.
Speaking about the decision to sell, Melanie Boissevain said: “Penally Abbey has been such a special part of our lives for over a decade. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved here and of the wonderful team who have helped us create a hotel with real soul. With our family getting bigger and grandchildren now in our lives, the time feels right to hand it over to new custodians who can take it into its next prosperous chapter.”
Lucas Boissevain added: “This is a very personal decision for our family. Penally Abbey will always have a place in our hearts, but as we start to plan for retirement, we believe the hotel is ready for new owners to continue building on its success. It is an extraordinary opportunity to take on a much-loved property in a prime coastal location.”
The hotel is being offered freehold with a guide price of £2,250,000 and remains fully operational while the search for a new owner begins.
