The Fruit Pig Company: Craft black pudding producers partnering with leading independent hotels

Although The Fruit Pig Company were sadly unable to attend this year’s Independent Hotel Show due to staffing challenges, their story and ethos continue to resonate strongly with the independent and boutique hotel community.

While perhaps not the show’s most traditional exhibitor, the craft black pudding producers were eager to connect with hoteliers and chefs who share their passion for considered, quality-led produce. With a growing fine dining clientele, Fruit Pig’s handmade black puddings already feature on menus at The Hand & Flowers, Brown’s Hotel, the new Rosewood Chancery in Grosvenor Square and The Newt in Somerset.

Fruit Pig’s approach mirrors many of the values celebrated within the independent hotel sector: tradition, authenticity, sustainability and uncompromising quality. Matt and Grant, both qualified slaughtermen, oversee the entire process from abattoir to their SALSA-approved factory, producing the UK’s only nationally available fresh blood black pudding. By contrast, most other national producers rely on imported dried blood powder, prioritising scale over craft.


 

Using 98% British ingredients — including fresh blood, fat, oats, barley and onions — Fruit Pig’s black puddings are a sustainable, low food-mile product. Since the blood used is a by-product of another process, the puddings achieve near zero-impact credentials. In retail, Fruit Pig supply independent butchers, delis and farm shops such as Fortnum, Gloucester Services and Tebay Services, and remain committed to never supplying national supermarkets.

“Many chefs and consumers assume that all black puddings are made the same,” says co-founder Matt. “Whilst there are some delicious dried blood black puddings out there, we know where our prestigious puddings sit in this industry. We’re extremely proud of the extra efforts we make in harvesting fresh blood and believe this is fundamental to what we’re trying to achieve. Our craft black puddings are the most authentic, sustainable, food-mile-friendly, farm-to-fork-ticking black puddings available in the UK. Of course, they’re jolly delicious too!”
